DIY Floor Cushion Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

DIY Floor Cushion Crochet Pattern and Tutorial

Did you catch my last post about making DIY jumbo yarn from old sheets? Well, we are building on that post today to teach you how to make a floor cushion from that jumbo yarn.

I have two boys, and by “boys” I mean, “whirlwinds of dirt, energy, and destruction.” Don’t get me wrong, they can be so gentle and loving, but when it comes time for them to settle down to sleep, they play off of each other’s energy to maintain a frantic hurricane of activity. My husband and I realized quickly that we could either pop our head in there every five minutes and get onto them, and, therefore, get nothing accomplished for literally HOURS and have a pair of very sleepy, cranky boys the next day, OR one of us can sit in their room for ten to thirty minutes to help them settle and sleep. I often sit and crochet, and the boys will lay quietly and watch my hook until they can’t stay awake any longer, or hubs will sit and sing to them (he’s a musician, remember?) until their sleepy eyes close. While this may be unconventional, we find everyone is happy with this set up. So, instead of buying a chair to be climbed on and wrestled in, I whipped up a comfy floor cushion for us to use in our nightly bedtime routine.

Of course, the kids are loving the floor pillow as well! They have decided it is the perfect place to read books!

Materials

To make your very own upcycled floor pillow, you will need to start with the first post in my series: How to Make DIY Jumbo Yarn. In that post, I give you all the details you need to take a pair of sheets and turn them into jumbo yarn. For this pillow, I used one pair of king sized sheets cut into 2” strips and some scraps from an old white sheet. You can cut up as many sheets as you want to make this pillow as big or as small as you need - all the details for the sizing are listed below!

DIY Jumbo Yarn

Of course, you need a good, jumbo sized hook! I used a 20 mm custom hook from Handcarved Hooks. You will want to choose a hook based on how thickly you cut your sheets into yarn. For the 2” strips I cut, a 20-25 mm hook works well. For 1-1.5” strips, I recommend the 15-20mm size hook. Changing the size of your hook and how thickly you cut your strips will effect the size of the stitches and how many stitches you need to complete this project.

If you want a fancy hook, the Furls Alpha Series goes up to a beautiful 15 mm.

The Sizing

My pillow is 15” square and roughly 3” deep. You could make four 15” panels for a cube (make sure you overstuff it, or it will be floppy), or you could make the pillow 20” square, it all comes down to the size that works best for your space. Using the 2” jumbo yarn and the 20 mm hook, each of my single crochet stitches was 1” x 1”, so the overall pattern was 15 stitches by 15 rows. If your stitches are also 1” x 1”, then this pattern will work out perfectly!

If your stitches are too small, you can either go up a hook size, use thicker yarn, or just add a few more rows and stitches to get the size you want.

Stitches:

Ch - Chain

Sc - Single Crochet

Sl St - Slip Stitch

BLO - Back Loop Only

FLO - Front Loop Only

The Pattern

Main Panels, Make 2

Using your main color, ch 16.

Row 1: In second chain from hook, sc in each ch to the end. Turn.

Row 2-10:Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn.

Row 11: Switch to your contrast color, ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn.

Row 12: Switch to main color, ch 1, sc in blo of each stitch across. Turn.

Row 13: Ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn.

Row 14: Switch to contrast color, ch 1, sc in each stitch across. Turn.

Row 15: Switch to main color, ch 1, sc in flo of each stitch across. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

The sides of the cushion are worked onto one of the panels.

Using your contrast color, pick up a loop in the last stitch of Row 15.

Round 1: Sc in each stitch across, down the side, across the bottom, and back up the side. Do not add any stitches in the corner. The panel will start to form a bowl shape. Join to first sc with a sl st. Do not turn.

Round 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each stitch around. Join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off, weave in ends.

Joining the two panels:

Place the two panel together with the ridges created by the flo and blo stitches facing each other. Using your contrast color, pick up a loop through both panels. Sc through each stitch on three sides, making sure to work through both panels. Leave the fourth side open. Fasten off, weave in ends. Turn right side out.

Stuffing

I wanted to be able to stuff my floor pillow with something useful, so I left the fourth side open for easy stuffing and removal. I used a winter weight twin sized duvet that wasn’t in use and folded it up and stuffed inside! Once the duvet was inside, I used a strip of yarn twice as long as my opening and whip stitched it through both panels. I knotted the end and tucked it into the pillow. If I ever need to, I can simply untie the knot and open up the end to remove and use the duvet.
