Polcinigo Poncho: Crochet Along with Furls

Polcinigo Poncho: Crochet Along with Furls

The wind tickled our ears and we pedaled our bikes faster. We knew adventure waited for us at the top of the hill. Polcinigo Palace, the ruins of an eighteen century palace, waited at the end of our journey. We crossed the Livenza river, swung a right, and began our ascent up winding cobblestone roads leading to the crumbling stucco perched on the peak. We wandered through the wasted halls, the sun warming our backs through the absent roof. Flowers and motifs danced across the stucco, grass and moss carpeted each room. The palace was full of imagination, dreams, and a longing for a romantic age long past.

The Polcinigo Poncho pattern has an air of romantic adventure to it. The dancing Catherine’s Wheel stitch at the hem reminds me of the stucco border along the roofless walls. The hood is ready to protect your ears from wistful winds. Of course, I had to include tassels, because what adventure is complete without them?

This crochet poncho pattern is part of the Furls Crochet Along for the month of February. Keep reading for more!

More about the design

I haven’t word a poncho since I was a kid riding my bike to Polcinigo, but since they are coming back a fashion trend, it seemed fitting to make one inspired by one of my favorite places. Polcinigo inspired my love for historical fiction, for architecture, and for the whimsical restlessness that drives us to explore the old and mysterious.

I played around with the combination of the shell stitch with the Catherine’s Wheel stitch for a while, but my first design with this stitch pattern had to be scrapped. It’s still waiting in my “to frog” pile. But I’m so thankful that my experience with it brought me to this design, which seems to perfectly embody the sense of whimsical adventure that I wanted to capture.

Design features

When writing this pattern, I knew it had to have a hood! I love hooded things. I might be described as a yarn troll, lurking, hooded, through the yarn shops, hands stuffed in her hoodie pockets. I think most people love the idea of a hood, and the one of this poncho does double duty. Not only will it keep your ears warm in a pinch, but it you want to feel the sun on your ears, it cuddles the back of your neck, giving a little extra warmth.

The hood has a whimsical pixie point, a working drawstring, and two tassels that set the mood for the entire look. I really hate making tassels, but these ones? They are worth it!

The entire poncho is made five easy pieces (plus two tassels). First, you will make the front panel, then the back panel. Those can be blocked before they are joined for a more finished look. Then we will move on to making the hood, hood ribbings, the icord drawstring. Once all the pieces are complete, then we get to assemble our masterpiece!
