Bunny Ear Spring Scrunchy: Free Crochet Pattern

Bunny Ear Spring Scrunchy: Free Crochet Pattern

Spring is bouncy. Little budded branches bound in the spring breezes while eager daffodils search for the shining warmth of the life-bringing sun. My daughter dances through the dandelions, singing the new Frozen songs, her hair in wild wisps around her face. Suddenly, she stops. Hands on her hips, she declares, “I just can’t do ANYTHING with this hair!” I laugh and call her over. In mere moments, her wisps are bound into a bouncy waterfall ponytail atop her head with her favorite scrunchy. It’s her favorite because Mommy made it!

With Easter just around the corner, I’ve got my eye out for all the fun things to toss in my kid’s baskets: little treats, some necessities, new spring sandals, some outdoor activities. I love adding some new hair accessories to my daughter’s basket, since it seems to always be in the way! This year, I made these fun little bunny ear scrunchies - and she LOVES them!

The Yarn

I wanted this scrunchy to feel earthy and organic, to bring to mind linen dresses, farmhouse gardens, and warm weather fun! So naturally, I opted for cotton! I used for the white scrunchies the Lion Brand Comfy Cotton. This is a dk/3 weight cotton blend that is soft and easy to work with. For the red ones, I used a dk/3 weight cotton from my stash - I believe it was hand dyed in Italy! You could use any dk/3 weight cotton or even a regular 4/worsted weight cotton. The larger weight cotton will give a tighter fabric.

I love the crispness of the white cotton and my daughter loves the whimsy of the red!

Other Materials

You will also need a hair elastic to make the scrunchy around. I used a smaller one, since my daughter has fine, wispy hair. You can make this pattern with any size hair elastic to accomodate thicker or thinner hair. I like the Goodies Ouchless hair elastics.

Materials:

50 yds of Dk/3 weight cotton yarn

5.00 mm hook

Yarn Needle

Hair Elastic

Stitches and Terms:

Ch—Chain

Dc– Double Crochet

Sc—Single Crochet

Sc Dec—Single Crochet Decrease

Sc Inc—Single Crochet Increase

Sl st—Slip Stitch

Notes:

U.S. Terms

Stitches between *stars* are repeated. Stitches in (parenthesis) are made in the same stitch or space.

Starting chain does not count in this pattern.

This pattern can be made with any size hair elastic, as long as it is big enough to accommodate the width of the crocheted fabric.

The scrunchy is made in rounds. Join each round with a slip stitch, but do not turn.

The “bunny ears” are made in rows. Turn at the end of each row.

Gauge is not important to the overall outcome of this pattern.

Special Stitches:

Sc Dec—worked across two stitches. Pull up a loop in the first stitch, pull up a loop in the second stitch, yarn over, pull through all three loops.

Sc Inc—complete two single crochet stitches in the same stitch of space.

The Pattern:

Scrunchy:

Ch 8. Loop the chain though the elastic and join with a sl st. The ch loop should have the hair elastic running through it.

Round 1: Ch 2, dc in each ch, join with sl st to first dc. (8 dc)

Round 2: Ch 2, dc in each dc, joing with sl st to first dc. (8 dc)

Repeat Round 2 until the crocheted tube is as long as the stretched out hair elastic. Make sure you stretch the elastic—otherwise the crocheted tube will prevent the elastic from stretching.

Fasten off, leave a long tail for seaming.

Seam the last row and the first together to close the scrunchy.
