Verona Pullover: A Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern

Verona Pullover: A Beginner Friendly Crochet Pattern

While spring is popping up all over Virginia, a lot of my northing crochet friends are still buried under snow! In fact, we have had an early spring this year. Normally, our daffodils are shoving through drifts of snow to show off their spring colors, but this year has been warm and sunny. The Verona Pattern series normally gets published in February, but I was a little behind this year - I wanted to make sure the pattern would work for any body type! So, here she is, the Verona Pullover.

Don’t forget to save this pattern to Pinterest!

About the Pattern

This pullover is worked from top to bottom in two pieces. First, make the double ribbed collar, seam it and continue on with the body of the sweater. You will work three rounds of puff stitches, which can be in your main color or in a contrasting color. The rest of the pullover is worked in half double crochet, increasing until you reach the armhole depth. Once you split for the armholes, continue working in continuous rounds until you reach the length you want. Do not fasten off, but continue to the bottom ribbing.

For the sleeves, you will pick up the yarn in the underarm and work hdc in continuous rounds until you reach the desired length. You can add two rows of the contrast yarn at the end of each sleeve if desired. If you prefer a looser fit in the sleeves, simply add an increase in the underarm every other round until you reach the desired width. I highly recommend trying on your garment as you go. For instance, try it on after you finish the cowl, after you split for the sleeves, and as you work the body, so you can get a feel for the fit and make adjustments as needed.

The Sizes

Size inclusivity is a huge goal of mine this year! I’m aiming to make all of my patterns available in sizes XS - 5X, and this is one of those patterns! The pattern is designed with minimal ease through the body, but nice, roomy sleeves that are comfortable to wear. Check the size chart below to know which size you should make!

Sizes (to fit actual):

XS: 30” bust, 6” armhole depth

S: 34” bust, 7” armhole depth

M: 38” bust, 7.5” armhole depth

L: 42” bust, 8” armhole depth

XL: 46” bust, 8.5” armhole depth

2X: 50” bust, 9” armhole depth

3X: 54” bust, 9.5” armhole depth

4X: 58” bust, 10” armhole depth

5X: 62” bust, 10.5” armhole depth

The Yarn

I used the Wool of the Andes Tweed from We Crochet to make this design. The Wool of the Andes Tweed is not the softest yarn ever, so if you are sensitive to fabrics, I recommend getting their superwash version, which is much softer. Of course, and medium worsted weight yarn will work for this pattern, as long as you meet the gauge. Check out the chart below to know how much yarn you will need:

Medium Worsted (4) weight yarn

Other Tools

I used my favorite Furls crochet hooks in the sizes 6.5 mm for most of the pattern, and my 5.5 mm for the arm cuffs and bottom ribbing. You will also need a yarn needle to weave in your ends and a pair of sharp scissors to trim those ends. Check out some of my favorites below:

Notes:

The ribbing is worked in rows. Turn at the end of each row.

Ch 1 at the beginning of the rows does not count as a stitch.

Puff stitch rounds are joined. Hdc rounds are not joined, but worked in continuous rounds.

Puff stitches are worked BETWEEN the puffs of the previous round, not in the top of the puffs.

Do not join to the first stitch when working in continuous rounds. Mark the first stitch of each round and move the stitch marker up as you complete each round.

When splitting for the sleeves, I recommend counting out the stitches that you will skip for the armholes and connecting the first and last skipped stitch with a stitch marker. This will make working that round easier.

Each round increases by 8 stitches until you reach the armhole depth.

You can make the pullover as long or as short as you want by adding or subtracting from the main body rounds.

Notes in the pattern are in bold italics.

Stitch counts are in bold italics at the end of each row/round.

Special Stitches:

Puff: *Yarn over, insert hook into the indicated stitch, pick up a loop, repeat from * twice, yarn over and pull through all 7 loops on your hook. Do not chain to finish the puff.

Inc: Work 2 stitches in the same stitch or space. For puff stitch rounds, you will work 2 puff stitches in the same space. For hdc rounds, you will work 2 hdc in the same stitch.

Dec: Work 1 stitch across 2 hdc. Yarn over, pull up a loop in the first indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up a loop in the next indicated stitch, yarn over, pull through all 5 loops on hook.

Sleeves:

Join your MC between the two hdc that form the underarm area of your sweater. Draw up a loop and ch 1. Hdc in the same space and use a st marker to mark this st as your first st.

Continue working the sleeves following the instructions below.

Please note, if you would like a fuller sleeve for your body shape, you can add an increase in this same space every other round until you like the fit for your arm. You will not need to decrease to adjust for the increases, since the sleeve is intended to have a slight balloon shape near the cuff.

You can also add rounds for more length or remove rounds for a shorter sleeve.
